New report: Only 1 in 6 Nordic PMO teams has the right tools for strategic work

The Nordic PMO Reality Report 2026 is based on 789 interviews with PMO managers, portfolio managers and project leaders in Sweden, Norway and Finland. It is the largest study of its kind in the Nordics.

Spreadsheets as the default solution

The results show that 83% work in hybrid environments where dedicated systems are combined with spreadsheets and manual processes. Only 17% have a dedicated solution for project and portfolio management. Up to half a working week per month is spent on manual reporting.

Leadership underestimates project reality

34% in each country in the study reported, independently of each other, the same thing: leadership underestimates how much time and resources projects actually require. More than 650 open-ended responses point in the same direction.  

A dedicated solution changes the role of the PMO

The 17% with a dedicated PPM solution stand out across every dimension in the study. They have greater decision-making authority, stronger data confidence, better predictability and a PMO function that is far more likely to be positioned as strategic support rather than governance and control.

About the report – The Nordic PMO Reality Report 2026

The Nordic PMO Reality Report 2026 is the largest PMO study ever conducted in the Nordics. 789 PMO managers, portfolio managers and project leaders from Sweden, Norway and Finland participated anonymously. Respondents hold roles as PMO manager, portfolio manager or project/programme leader, or equivalent, in organisations with at least 100 employees.
